Welcome to Photonics in Mexico

Prof. J. Javier Sánchez-Mondragón brought one of the first works in Photonics at México, alumni from University of Rochester, was hired at the “Centro de Investigaciones en Óptica (CIO)” in León, Guanajuato, at 1980, creating the group; “Nonlinear Optics and Lasers.” In 1991, he, some collaborators and students moved to the “Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica (INAOE)” in Tonantzintla, Puebla to create the group; “Photonics and Physical Optics Lab.” Without a full understanding of the word “Photonics,” because of the tremendous scientific results in quantum optics, solitons, photorefractive crystals, and optical fiber devices, the group started to be recognized in CONACYT and several laboratories around the world. Most of the doctoral students got spaces in different institutes and Universities in Mexico, resulting now a consolidated group in the area.
